Our Community

TAYLOR...  “Where Peace and Prosperity Meet…” lies on a broad plateau 200 feet above the Peace River, at km 56 (Mile 35) of the Alaska Highway in North Eastern British Columbia, Canada.  The District of Taylor is a community that cares about family and lifestyle as much as it cares about economic security.

Our community has many popular recreation facilities for children and adults alike.  The community boasts an award winning District Ice Centre, a championship 18 hole golf course, four curling sheets at the Taylor curling club, a 26 metre portable indoor pool during the summer months, a 3.5 km Participaction Trail which circles the golf course, tracked cross country ski trails in the winter, a motocross and stock car track, Peace Island Park and all of the recreational opportunities that the Peace River itself provides.  These facilities, combined with an excellent elementary school and our small town atmosphere, makes Taylor a favorable location for young families.

As well, the community is blessed with good weather and good soil.  The microclimate generated by the Peace River results in the community being surrounded by some of the best producing agricultural land in the province.  Our experience at the local golf course tends to indicate a growing season that is approximately four weeks longer than other areas within the Peace Region.  Therefore, the market gardens and large farms which surround Taylor play an important role in making our community a major economic centre in northeastern British Columbia.  For example, the Peace River Greenhouses annually grow more than three million tree seedlings for reforestation programs.

However, modern day Taylor continues to maintain its status as a major economic centre due to the community being the site of several large industrial plants.  Our major industrial and corporate citizens include Duke Energy  - a co-generation facility, Taylor Gas Liquids - which is a liquid extraction facility and the Fibreco Pulp Mill.  Fibreco incorporates the latest technology in its bleached thermomechanical pulp mill so that it is one of the few pollution free mills in the world.  As well, North Peace Timber has a value-added facility and Nels Ostero gravel pit both call Taylor home. All of these corporations work together with the District to ensure our community is truly a safe place to live!

Although we look to the future, we have not forgotten our past.  Taylor is rich with history.  It is named after Herbie Taylor, a ferryman, who maintained a crossing for the service of fur traders, prospectors and homesteaders heading for the north.  The role prospectors played in developing the region is celebrated annually with the World Invitational Gold Panning Championships that are held the first weekend of August.  A special heritage site is The Church of the Good Shepherd, built by volunteers in 1932 in memory of Mr. and Mrs. Otto Hoffstrom’s four young daughters, who drowned when their father’s car plunged accidentally from the ferry into the Peace River.

In other words, THERE IS MUCH TO ENJOY IN TAYLOR.  Taylor’s residents enjoy a peaceful rural setting combined with a small town atmosphere, recreational and other municipal services second to none when compared to like sized communities.  All of this while just minutes away from the extensive commercial services offered by larger centres. These factors combined have resulted in a growth rate that is second to none in the Peace Region.

We welcome you to our community.  Let us show you what we have to offer.
